Buying a Dashcam: The Definitive Guide

Buying a Dashcam: The Definitive Guide

Buying a dash cam is not only a great way to capture footage on a scenic drive, but installing a dash cam could save you a lot of money in the event of an unfortunate accident. Plus, with car thefts growing steadily year-on-year, dash cams are a simple and affordable way to improve the security of your vehicle when you're not in it.

What are dash cams?

A dashboard camera, or dash cam for short, sits discreetly on your dashboard or window screen and will record everything it sees. Depending on the model you purchase, some dash cams can also be set to cabin mode. This is the model you are likely to see in a taxi as these cameras record the interior of the vehicle.

Why buy a dash cam?

Great for drivers of all ages, there are many reasons why you should buy a dash cam for your vehicle. Our favourites include:

  • Worried you could be involved in a car accident that's not your fault?
  • Worried your car could be a victim of criminal damage or car theft?
  • Worried you'll miss a moment on the road that could make you a viral sensation?

If you're worried by any of the above, then a dash cam could be the answer to your prayers. Easily installed in your vehicle, a dash cam can give you that crucial piece of evidence in an insurance claim, a vital picture of the person who damaged your car or it could even capture that hilarious moment that makes you a social media sensation.

How do I install a dash cam?

As an electronic device, your dash cam will need a source of electricity to operate. This means that you will need to install the dash cam in your vehicle. The three main ways to install and operate a dash cam are:

Charged Supply

This is where you charge the camera in your home or workplace on the mains power supply. There are very few positives to buying this type of camera, as there is a high risk that the camera could run out of battery in the middle of its operation.

Cigarette Lighter Power

This is where you plug the dash cam into your cigarette lighter charging point. Although this is a simple and affordable way to install a dash cam, the wire hanging down from the dash cam can be slightly annoying and unsightly.

Hardwiring

The most efficient and tidy way to install a dash cam, hardwiring involves connecting the dash cam to your vehicle's fuse box connection. For a competent DIY'er, or mechanic, this is a simple job that should take no longer than 30 minutes. If you are not comfortable completing the installation yourself then seek the help of a professional.
